Class2Career - Featuring the Automotive Pathway

At Buckeye Community School (BCS) we create an alternative experience, different from traditional high school, that works with our students’ individual interests and needs. Our Class2Career - Automotive Pathway is a great example of how to earn credits toward your future career while not feeling like you’re stuck in a classroom.

Our Automotive Pathway program covers vehicle service and maintenance, electrical circuitry, automotive brakes, and electrical components, as well as teaching students management and people skills. This prepares our students to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification, which opens doors to great jobs in the Automotive industry.

Student Profile: Devin

One of our Automotive students just passed his ASE Certification exam and earned a promising job at Mathews Ford, when he was 2 years younger than their minimum employee age requirement. We asked Devin to answer a few questions about his experience in the BCS Automotive Pathway:

What got you interested in the Automotive program at BCS?

I have always wanted to work on cars and fix things. This let me get classes done for high school, but while working on cars and getting certified.

What is it about BCS that works for you?

I don't have to waste time sitting in the classroom.

Describe the Automotive program at BCS - what's it like, how does it work, what do you do in "class"?

So for class, we go to Marion and listen to the video class. We get to see what Jeff is doing and tell him what to do next and answer the questions to practice for the ASE. Then we go to Mathews Ford and work with Chuck. We do the same things there that we did in the video class.

Why did you want to get your ASE certification?

The ASE certification lets me make more money. The more certifications you have the more you can charge.

You got your ASE certification and landed a job at 16 when company policy said you had to be 18. What was that like?

They saw that I was a kick-butt mechanic so the owner approached me and brought me into his office and offered me a job. I am going to keep working on vehicles.
